It is rare that having an 18-game winning streak end is a good thing, but fighting to a two-point loss against Division I Harcum College earlier last week set up Cecil College for a colossal victory against Chesapeake College. In a matchup of the #6 versus #4 Division II junior college teams in the country, the Seahawks dominated the Skipjacks for a 96-73 win.

Powered by Darell Johnson’s double-double with 27 points and 14 rebounds, Cecil never seemed in jeopardy against the higher-ranked squad from the Eastern Shore. The Seahawks also dominated the boards, pulling down 51 rebounds against the Skipjacks’ 23.

For Coach Ed Durham the win was a good barometer for how the postseason might look for his team. “We felt like we needed to really have a good week against the team that beat us earlier in the year (Harcum),” said Durham. “We felt like this time of year, it’s preparing you for the tournament. The ironic thing today is the fact that you win today, so that in March you might have to beat that team again on a neutral floor in a playoff game.”

The 18-game winning streak was bookended with losses against Harcum College from up the road in Bryn Mawr. Harcum is ranked #8 in the Division I NJCAA polls. This win against Chesapeake will likely move Cecil College up in the rankings.
